Reviews, the Good the Bad and the Funny

Book reviews are always a tedious affair.

I am lucky enough to have more positive reviews than negative and that is something today when everyone thinks they are a critic.

Let me share three of my favorite questionable critiques, in hopes of making you laugh a bit too.

If you are familiar with my writing you will know that the main characters in the Lakeview Novel Series are based off our three daughters and that I use their names for the leads.

I think it is so cliché that the author has made the character of Leigh so clumsy. Why is it authors do this? It is degrading to teenage girls everywhere.

Well hmm…the real Leigh is quite clumsy. Sorry baby if you are reading this, but I know you will agree. The local hospital knows us by name and I usually have to buy our bandages at Costco.

Two reviewers in a Goodreads chat actually made fun of the name choices I made in Hush. Blakely, what kind of name is that? Is it even a real name??

Blakely is 18 and is named after the island where my husband and I married 24 years ago. We love her name and so does she.

My favorite though, is from a twelve year old book blogger. First off, let me say bravo to her. How amazing is it that a twelve year old is blogging book reviews. As a mom I am totally proud of her.

In her review she wrote that she liked my book, but she thinks I swear too much in order to sound cool.

Oh honey, I wanted to tell her, I just have a potty mouth, sorry.

After all is said and done though, reviews are incredibly important to the life and success of a book. If you read something that inspires you, rate it, review it, be an author’s best friend. We can’t do it without you!

Keep on Reading – Stacey

  1. You know, I can understand why some authors NEVER read their book reviews. There will always be the good, the bad, and the ugly. I remember reading a review of my first book where the reader was incensed that I’d referred to Hannah’s home as a “houseboat” instead of a “float home.” It seemed to wreck the story for her. Oh well… 🙂

    • Too funny. I grew up on a houseboat in Seattle. I would have a serious giggle fit if someone called it a float home! I swear (pun intended) half of writing is about finding the humor in the ridiculous. 🙂

  2. I love, LOVE your books and think you’re really cool despite your potty mouth!

  3. I have always wondered if authors really read book reviews :). If I was a writer I don’t think I would have the courage. hehe! AND, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your books, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about here 🙂

    • I read them all and learn from many. Constructive ones only help me grow as a writer. Always LOVE reading yours though. Thank you for all the kind words and support. It is for people like you that I do what I do!

  4. So funny! I love the name Blakely (guess why?) You should hear my daughters’ reviews…they think you are amazing. They can’t believe I ‘know’ you.

    • Love that! 🙂 Thank you!
